The Museum's mission is to inform the public of the history of the City of Kings Mountain and surrounding areas and provide a facility to exhibit the collection. The collection ranges from 1860s vintage clothing, World War I & II memorabilia, textiles, and archival collections of documents and photos. With the variety of items in the collection it is possible to have four to five different exhibits each year.

The Board of Directors approached the City about using the old Post Office building, which had been empty for ten years. The City bought the structure from the Federal Government in 1987 when the Post Office moved to its new facility. After several years of hard work by tireless volunteers the building was restored and the Museum officially opened in the fall of 2000.
